Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Programs are designed for engineering professionals who work full-time and need flexible online education options from a leading engineering school.
There are many advantages of distance learning. Here are just a few:
- Linking faculty expertise and industry - Enabling faculty to reach and engage a wider network of students by presenting lectures once. Professionals and faculty connect virtually developing broader relationships to solve "real" industry problems.
- Opportunity - allowing busy professionals advanced education opportunities anytime, anywhere.
- Flexible - students can view the web-streamed lectures and other course materials when they have time.
- Accessibility of course materials - By making course lectures always available to students throughout the semester to review a complex lesson or prepare for exams.
- Robust Virtual University Portal - Students can view lectures at home, work, or when traveling via ASU's Virtual "MyASU" portal.
- Proven - Studies have supported students effectively learn through distance learning. Research points out that student attitudes about distance learning are generally positive. View USDLA.

- Put simply, a proctor is a person that monitors students while an exam is taking place.
- As a student registered in an ASU Engineering Online course, you will need to identify a person who could serve as the proctor for your quizzes and/or exams each semester. This person must be someone who can fulfill the requirements of a proctor objectively. The proctor cannot be another student in the program or admitted to ASU, a friend/colleague, family member, teaching assistant or someone who reports directly to you. A supervisor/manager, librarian, member of the HR/Training staff within your company, former professors, or a member of a learning or testing center (i.e. Sylvan Learning Centers or college testing centers) could qualify to serve in this position.
- The proctor will be responsible for receiving exams via e-mail, following the guidelines for administering the exam (time frame, open- or closed-book exam, or other instructions) and returning the exam to the University via fax or e-mail.
- The Proctor Form and other important documents can be found at: Student Resources & Support.
- Completed, signed proctor forms should be scanned and e-mailed to cpd.hwexam@asu.edu.
- Sound card and speakers
- Color monitor capable of 800x600 resolution
- High speed Internet connection capable of 150 kbps transfer rate
- Windows Media Player 8 or newer

No, a graduate student who has not been in attendance at the university for one semester must submit an admission application to the Graduate College. The application should be submitted at least one month before the beginning of the semester in which the student plans to reenter. For details on readmission and other matters relating to the application fee, visit: Graduate College Admissions.
Students planning to discontinue enrollment for a semester or more must request approval to maintain continuous enrollment (leave of absence). Students may petition the Graduate College for a leave of absence for a maximum of two semesters during their entire program. A petition for a leave of absence, endorsed by the members of the student's supervisory committee and the head of the academic unit, must be approved by the Graduate College dean. This request must be filed and approved before the anticipated absence.
An approved leave of absence will enable students to re-enter their program without re-applying to the university. Students who do not enroll for a fall or spring semester without an approved leave of absence by the Graduate College are considered withdrawn from the university under the assumption that they have decided to discontinue their program. Students removed for this reason may reapply for admission to resume their degree program; the application will be considered along with all other new applications to the degree program and pre-admission credits will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
